4oz dates – cut into pieces
2oz margarine
1 teacup boiling water
Level teaspoon bicarbonate soda
8oz self raising flour
6oz brown sugar
1 egg
2oz walnuts

1. Place dates and margarine in basin with boiling water and bicarbonate soda.
2. Allow to cool.
3. In a mixing bowl, combine flour, walnuts, sugar and then add the beaten egg and the dates and margarine mixture.
4. Beat together with a wooden spoon.
5. Put in a lined 2lb loaf tin.
6. Bake at Gas mark 3 for between 1 to 1¼hours.
