Confused.com gives online comparison quotes from several of the larger companies. You can get affiliate money with some of the bigger insurance companies by using a cashback scheme such as QuidCo. These cashback sites are discussed on the price comparison site MoneySavingExpert - this site is also useful to show the impact that a variations in your job title can have on your premiums - see here

Car Insurance Explained gives some background info - including info on postcodes and their impact on your premium. For an alternative list of postcode areas (for comparison), click here.

http://www.car-insurance-hints-tips.co.uk/ has some useful hints and tips too

See also http://www.noclaimsdiscount.co.uk/ which explains why you should make sure that your insurance company is under no confusion that you are going to make a claim when you just make an enquiry.

UK Insurance Directory is a useful source of info too (incidentally a useful car reg check can be found at https://www.vehiclecheck.co.uk/ and loads of insurance info at http://www.ukinsurancedirectory.com/)

Short term / one-off cover: For temporary, instant, short-term insurance for test drives see http://www.tempcover.co.uk and http://www.dayinsure.com For one-off Track Day Insurance, see Richard Egger, Competition Car Insurance or Morris (details above)

Insuring abroad

Stuart Collins specialise in extended cover for the EU (you just need to have the car back in the UK for 1 day a year for the MOT). BUT check what local laws are applicable, most EU countries will expect you to register a "foreign" car after about 6 months.

Another extended stay insurer is http://www.abbeygateinsure.com/ or +34 952 893 380 and ask for Denny

And finally... use askmid.com to check whether any car in the UK is insured.

European Breakdown

ADAC membership is EUR 79.50 (2009 - I recommend the Plus option).
Up to date tarrifs are here. English joining page here
Highly recommended from personal experience, cover in the UK is via the AA.

First Call provide full European cover from £76.95. See here for details. Reported to cover Home Start, Roadside Assistance, Roadside Repairs, Recovery, Onward Travel, Overnight Stay, European cover, and Trailers at no extra cost. BARC member discount available. Must be taken out 48 hours before a trip. Not personally used, and the reviews here are not encouraging.

Telepeage

(as at 26/3/2006)

If you're doing lots of Euro trips it's well worth signing up with Telepeage so that you can bypass the queues at peages. For a 30 euro deposit and 2 euro's per month you get a device that you just flash at the barrier when going through peages and barrier opens - this also means you use the unmanned lanes with an orange T. You then get debited from your UK bank account for the normal toll charges - there are no hidden costs..

https://www.sanef.com/fr/ecommerce/particulier/libert_souscrire_online_coordonnees.jsp?codeOption=FTM
click on un particulier - the system accepts UK debit cards and addresses

There's monthly version of the Sanef Liber-t card at €2.00 a month and they only charge you for the months that you actually use it. Otherwise there is a €30.00 deposit for the card (refundable upon return of the card in good working order) and a €3.00 shipping fee. You can use a UK credit card.

See http://www.autoroutes.fr/en/homepage.html for a route planner that includes a toll charge calculator
